Gorillaz Ride Out in Stylo

Gorillaz – Stylo (feat. Mos Def and Bobby Womack)

Plastic Beach

(Parlophone, Virgin; 2010)

The Gorillaz are a virtual band created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett.  Their identity is always hidden and they use “virtual band members”, portrayed as cartoon characters, in their music videos.  Their music is a collaborative effort from a variety of musicians, however Damon Albarn is the only permanent contributor.  They are heavily influenced by a variety of styles including hip-hop, alternative rock, electronic, and pop.  They are definitely a unique experience.  They have released three albums to date, the self-titled Gorillaz, Demon Days, and the brand new Plastic Beach.  Demon Days was nominated for five Grammy awards, and won for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

The track of the day is Stylo (feat. Mos Def and Bobby Womack) on their most recent album, Plastic Beach. Fictional band member Murdoc had this to say about the track:  “This is a new sound for Gorillaz. An electro-ish ‘crack funk’ sound, with a little bit of politics and a lot of soul going down. With ‘Stylo’, I wanted the music to feel euphoric, whilst still putting across how precarious our tightly packed situation is now, worldwide. Where we’re at as a species on this overpopulated planet.”  Enjoy!
