New Justice Remix

Well it’s not really new, but for some reason I’m just finding out about it.  At first, I thought it was a fake.  Most of them are.  This one’s legit though.  Justice’s remix of Justin Timberlake’s LoveStoned.  Enjoy!

MGMT Deserves Some Congratulations!

MGMT – Electric Feel (Justice Remix)

Oracular Spectacular, MGMT’s debut album, was quite simply spectacular.  Their unique brand of synth-pop was so damn catchy and so damn fun.  I recently got a listen of their new album, Congratulations, and although it’s good, it doesn’t jump out at you like their debut album does.  In Congratulations, they’ve ran with the style of songs in the second half of Oracular Spectacular. The tracks are little more experimental and lack the synth pop hooks of their debut.  They have stated in interviews that they don’t like the world of fame that came along with the huge success of their first album.  That’s understandable.  Apparently they viewed their success as ironic, considering they essentially became the band they were poking fun at in their first album.  So, it would seem, in order to shake this image of being a mainstream indie pop act, they’ve tried to grow more in touch with who they truly are musically.  Although I don’t like the result nearly as much as I enjoyed their debut, I can respect what they’re trying to do.  I like the direction that bands such as Radiohead and MGMT are attempting to take the music industry.

Unfortunately, music nowadays is written for singles.  The art of the cohesive experience of an album is being lost in the blur of .99 cent iTunes downloads.  MGMT decided to release their album as a whole, and not release any singles this time around.  I think that’s going to pay off in the long run for the music industry and hopefully other musicians will follow their lead.  I imagine many people who were fans of Oracular Spectacular only know it for Time to Pretend, Kids, and Electric Feel. This is exactly what MGMT are trying to combat, and hopefully listeners will take heed.

I don’t want to post a single song from Congratulations because that would be undermining what MGMT is trying to accomplish with the new album.  I highly recommend checking out Congratulations in its entirety, as it is still excellent work despite the change in style.  So, the track of the day is going to be Justice’s remix of Electric Feel. This track actually won the Grammy for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical in 2009.  Justice’s harsh synth style and MGMT’s poppy vocals mesh and contrast each other perfectly.  Enjoy!

Justice, They Are Your Friends

Justice vs. Simian – We Are Your Friends

In the spirit of going through my favorites towards the beginning, I have to give a shout-out to Justice.  They hail from the motherland of electronic music, France, and they do a great job of representing the name.  Their heavily distorted synths have a strong rock influence, and it shows in their fashion sense as well.  We’ll have to wait for their sophomore album to decide their true staying power, but I have a feeling the name Justice is going to be a household name.  I’ve heard some predictions that Justice is the next Daft Punk.  I wouldn’t go that far, but they’re pretty damn good!  Definitely check out their album Cross.  It’s got a couple Grammy nominations to its name and one of the coolest music videos I’ve seen in a long time with D.A.N.C.E.

The track for the day is going to be the one Justice got it all started with.  They released their remix of Simian’s Never Be Alone, entitled We Are Your Friends as an entry to a remix contest for a Paris college radio station.  They easily won the competition with it and were subsequently signed to Ed Banger records based on the sheer success of this track, so you know it has to kick ass.  Enjoy!
